Judging panel
All submitted stories will undergo an initial review by a distinguished committee of professors with expertise in the field. Finalists from this review will be carefully selected and passed on to award-winning author Sahar Mustafah, whose literary discernment and deep cultural insight will guide the selection of the most compelling story.
How to Submit
To participate, please email your submission or inquiries to aaef-contest@proton.me.
Make sure to include your full contact information (full name, address, email address, and phone number), your birth date, and the following statement:
“By submitting and emailing my story, I confirm that this is an original work by me, with no AI assistance beyond basic grammar checks, and that it has not been previously published. I also agree that after the story is accepted for publication by the AAEF to transfer copyright to the journal of the AAEF's choice.”

Sahar Mustafa is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants, an inheritance she explores in her fiction. Her debut novel The Beauty of Your Face was named a 2020 Notable Book and Editor's Choice by New York Times Book Review and one of Marie Claire Magazine's 2020 Best Fiction by Women. It was long listed for the Center for Fiction 2020 First Novel Prize and was a finalist for the Palestine Book Awards. Her short story "Star of Bethlehem" was awarded the Lawrence Prize for Best Fiction in 2022, and "Tree of Life" won the 2023 Robert J. DeMott Prize. Her recent fiction is featured in Stories from the Center of the World: New Middle East Fiction and The View from Gaza published in The Massachusetts Review. She was awarded a 2023 Jack Hazard Fellowship from New Literacy Project and an Illinois Arts Council Grant. Her second novel, The Slightest Green, is forthcoming from Interlink Books in 2025. Mustafah writes and teaches outside Chicago.
